  • Groundsperson data input
  • Dashboard based data management
  • Automatic turf performance scoring
  • Automatic turf status report generation

Project Summary

The health of turf grass is critical to sports venues and the performance of sportsmen and sportswomen that use it. Parameters such as density, hardness, water absorption, drainage and wear resistance are all critical parameters for ensuring turf grass quality in both amateur and professional sport.

To better understand the effects of substrate type, irrigation, fertiliser scheduling and environmental conditions on turf and athlete performance, CultinovaEDGE technology was used selected to realise a monitoring and management system for high-end sports turf applications.

Working closely with STRI, world leaders is high end sports turf management, a custom turf substrate and environmental monitoring system was developed that enabled the fully automatic measurement of moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity at multiple points across and within the depth of a sports field.

Field substrate measurements were complemented with light intensity, air temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction measurements to complete the automated measurement dataset.

To support the turf grass monitoring hardware, Cultinova was tasked with the development of a web-platform that would not only allow the analysis of the automatic measurement data, but also enable the manual input of measurement and observational data by groundspeople to create a rich dataset for assessing the health and maintenance requirements of playing surfaces.

Furthermore, to assist STRI's turf consultancy teams, the web-platform was programmed with intelligence to provide automated assessments of turf quality to enable the rapid identification of sports surfaces that require additional treatment or damage mitigation measures through STRI's support and consultancy services.

Our Solution

back

Utilising CultinovaEDGE™ sensor interface modules and working closely with a supplier of professional grade soil moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity sensors, we developed a sensor array that could be buried across and at various depths within sand, soil and compost substrate mixtures used in high-end sport surfaces.

With appropriate sensor calibration for the substrate type, each sensor in the array provides real-time measurements to generate time-variant 3D moisture, temperature and nutrient content maps of playing surfaces. Substrate measurement data was linked to are temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and light intensity measurements to generate a complete picture of turf and environment interactions across and within sport playing surfaces

Data was gathered on a 15-minute basis by  a CultinovaEDGE wireless data-logger and transmitted via mobile Internet connection to a cloud-based data storage platform.

Once in the cloud, sensor measurement data was integrated into a custom web-application that Cutlinova produced for STRI in collaboration with a 3rd-party software development team. The platform not only allowed the visualisation of automatically generated playing surface data, but also the input and visualisation of manually recorded data from groundspeople to build a complete picture of the health and quality of a sports turf surface.

The web-platform was programmed with a number of algorithms developed by the client to generate turf-health metrics based upon automatic and manually entered data. These metrics identify sports surfaces that require additional measures to improve quality before significant degradation of the surface occurs, saving time and associated costs of turf replacement and disruption to sports events.

The developed solution is utilised at a number of high-profile sports grounds, including Wimbledon All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wentworth Golf Club and Hearts Football Club.
