Project Summary

The addition of liquid fertiliser to closed-loop hydroponic systems is necessary to provide the nutrient ions necessary to promote the growth of the plants they support.

Traditionally, establishing ion concentrations in hydroponic solutions is undertaken using in-line electrical conductivity (EC) measurements. Although EC measurements are accurate in providing a value for total ion availability, they do not provide information regarding the concentration of individual ions, where deficits of one ion type can lead to poor plant yield.

In order to measure individual ion levels, time consuming and often expensive laboratory analysis is required. This tends to limit the number of samples taken and results in a time-lag in data availability for subsequent adjustment of nutrient solutions.

In this collaborative project, CultinovaEDGE hardware was used to control and optimise ion availability in closed-loop hydroponic systems as part of a solution employing a novel automated in-line approach for the measurement and control of individual ions.

Our Solution

back

Due to its modularity, scalability and flexibility, CultinovaEDGE hardware and software was utilised as part of a single ion nutrient delivery solution for closed-loop hydroponics applications.

Using novel ISFET sensors integrated into a custom measurement system developed by Anedo, the level of key ions of nitrate, potassium and ammonium where continuously monitored in closed-loop hydroponic systems. Ion concentration data from the ion measurement system was used by a custom ion-specific dosing unit realised using Cultinova hardware, which added precise amounts of individual ions in six different combinations to the hydroponic system to maintain ion concentrations at optimum levels.

A bespoke version of Cultinova's EDGE sensing and control software was produced to interface the ion measurement system to Cultinova hardware. Dosing control parameters were optimised based upon expert knowledge from Hochschule Osnabrück (HSO) to ensure the addition of the correct amount of ions based upon their relative deficiencies and ensure that neither too little or too much single ion dosing solution was added throughout multiple growth test-cycles.

In addition to single ion measurement and control in the hydroponics system, Cultinova hardware was also used to control pH levels in the hydroponic systems, lighting intensity using LED supplementary lighting and continuously measure air temperature, relative humidity and carbon diode levels within the growth structure.

The complete measurement and control system system was evaluated over a two-year period at HSO on model crops - hydroponically grown sweet potato and duckweed, the latter being chosen due to its rapid growth and nutrient absorption characteristics.

The precise control of ions resulted in increased levels of biomass, improved morphology and a reduction in fertiliser use in model crops grown over multiple cycles. The single ion measurement and control system is being further developed to realise a commercial solution for use in large-scale hydroponic plant production systems.
